We had a free afternoon, and since it was pretty hot (hot for Maine, it was probably 90) I wanted to be on the water. I love the water. Any form really...give me a lake, the ocean, a pool, even a swim-able river and I'm a happy girl.
My lovely friend Lacey, and my sister Megan were both free also, so Lacey recommended heading down to a spot in Surry, ME on Newbury Neck Rd. where there's a perfect little beach that most people don't know about. It's on Union River Bay, so the water is pretty calm and much warmer then the nearby ocean.
The beach is actually all small rocks and pebbles, so don't head down expecting sand. You may, however, find some seaglass! We sat on our towels sunbathing for approximately 5 minutes before we had to get in the water. Pebble beach + 90 degrees = SWEAT.
We headed into the water (word of warning....it is a bit slimy in the water since there aren't ocean waves & strong tides in this section) and had a great dip. We saw SO MANY crabs! They are the craziest little beasts to watch. There were several hermit crab fights, and then some other little crabs (not sure their type) joined in the fights. Entertaining to say the least!
We hung out at the beach for a little while....probably only an hour or so...and then we decided to go looking for somewhere to eat lunch/dinner. Perry's Lobster Shack was right on the beach with us, but we wanted a sit-down-serve-us-a-cold-beer type restaurant.
We packed up and drove the rest of the Newbury Neck road, just to enjoy the gorgeous day (and the A/C in the car) and then headed towards Ellsworth to get something to eat. We tried to eat at a place on the water in Surry, but we hit them right when their kitchen was closed to get ready for a show that night.
We got stuck in the only traffic possible......Rt. 1A....so it took us about an hour to get to our "lunch", the only saving grace was that it was a dead time of the day and our food arrived pretty quick!
